Washington state lawmakers approved a bill that will raise the littering fine from $50 to $125 for small trash loads—people caught on highways may face up to $218 in fines if cities add extra penalties.

The bill must still be signed by Gov. Bob Ferguson to take effect on July 27, and it comes in response to a study showing that local littering exceeds the national average.
