CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Vancouver police fatally shot Adam Gunderson six times during a struggle outside a Safeway on Dec. 4, 2024, and a report from the state’s Office of Independent Investigations said Gunderson, who was armed and identified as a (sovereign citizen), had meth in his system when he resisted arrest. The Oregonian
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The IBR split the I-5 Bridge replacement project into 28 bid packages but only one firm is interested in the general contractor role, raising concerns about rising costs and toll increases. Officials said construction could take up to 15 years and tolling will start in spring 2027 after a Record of Decision is issued early next year — cost estimates will be updated this fall to around $7.1 billion. - ➤ The Washington state Supreme Court upheld a state law banning the sale or transfer of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds on Thursday and ruled that these items are modifiers rather than arms. A dissenting opinion argued that high-capacity magazines are essential for self-defense—claims that may prompt further legal challenges in federal court. The Oregonian
- ➤ Governor Bob Ferguson signed a new law last week that forces clergy to report child abuse—information from confession is included—which has led the Archdiocese of Seattle to warn that clergy who follow the law will be excommunicated. The Department of Justice launched an investigation into potential First Amendment violations, and the law will take effect in July. KOIN
