Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.
Good morning, Vancouver.
Local firefighters will be at the Orchards and Salmon Creek Fred Meyer stores today asking for donations to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the Fill The Boot fundraiser—an event that has raised over $700 million in 70 years to support neuromuscular disease research, care and family support. The firefighters are also aiming to out-donate neighboring cities.
Students from Skyview High School in Vancouver claimed the grand prize in the global 'Plant the Moon Challenge' on June 13 for their experiment that showed how worms help grow plants with medicinal properties in lunar soil (the team included Casey Flinn, Sofia Gomez Almazan, and Olivia Countney).
After years of failed attempts, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists said that 16 northern leopard frogs raised at the Oregon Zoo survived the winter at Columbia National Wildlife Refuge.
Officials controlled invasive bullfrogs (which can eat the smaller frogs) by drying ponds and trapping tadpoles to help support the fragile, endangered species.
