COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Evergreen Habitat for Humanity will open its second Habitat Store on Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. at 3200 NE 52nd St.—the event includes a ribbon cutting hosted by the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and food and activities. Donated furniture, home goods and building materials will be sold—proceeds support affordable homeownership and repairs.  Clark County Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Evergreen School District postponed school start to Sept 2 because support staff began a strike today for better wages—district officials said the delay gives more time to negotiate a fair contract. The union representing 1,400 non-teacher employees will continue under the current agreement while seeking a resolution.  KOIN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a mild and wet winter for the Pacific Northwest with the coldest periods arriving in late November, early December and early February—residents east of the Cascades may see mixed precipitation and below-normal snowfall while those west will experience warmer temperatures and many rainy days. NOAA has issued a La Niña watch for fall and early winter.  KOIN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clark County’s 2024 report showed a nearly 2% rise with 8,894 people experiencing homelessness last year and 58% of them newly homeless. The Council for the Homeless said urgent housing help is needed—families, veterans, and youths saw some improvements with rental assistance and housing programs.  KOIN
  • Tomorrow, Vancouver will reopen the first block of the Main Street Promise project with a block party from 3 to 5 p.m.—the block between Mill Plain Boulevard and 15th Street will feature live music, light refreshments, and remarks from Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle and city leaders.  Clark County Today
